Breast Reduction Surgery in Singapore

Thigh liposuction at Argent Plastic Surgery is performed by Dr Lee Hanjing, a fellowship trained plastic surgeon accredited by the Ministry of Health, at Mount Alvernia Hospital. The procedure removes localised fat deposits from the inner and outer thighs that have not responded to diet or exercise, with the goal of improving thigh contour. If you would like to understand whether this procedure is appropriate for your situation, book a consultation with Dr Lee Hanjing.

What Is Thigh Liposuction?

Thigh liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes localised fat from the thigh through small incisions, typically less than one centimetre, placed in discreet locations such as the inner groin fold or mid-thigh crease. A thin cannula is inserted through these incisions to suction the fat away from the surrounding tissue.

The procedure addresses fat volume and contour. It does not remove excess skin. Patients with good skin elasticity tend to see the skin retract naturally after fat removal; patients with significant skin laxity may need a different or additional approach, which will be covered below.

Thigh Liposuction vs Thigh Lift (Thighplasty)

These two procedures address different problems, and the distinction matters when deciding which assessment to pursue.

Thigh LiposuctionThigh Lift (Thighplasty)
What it addressesLocalised excess fatExcess skin and soft tissue laxity
Best suited toGood skin elasticity with diet- and exercise-resistant fatSignificant skin laxity, often after major weight loss
What it does not addressLoose or excess skinFat volume alone
AnaesthesiaLocal with sedation or general, depending on volumeGeneral anaesthesia
Can be combinedYes, with a thigh lift where both fat and laxity are presentYes, with liposuction where both concerns exist

Whether one, the other, or a combination is appropriate depends on a physical assessment of the tissue, not on the procedure that happens to rank first in a search result.

Inner Thigh and Outer Thigh Liposuction

The inner and outer thigh are distinct treatment areas with different anatomical considerations.

Inner ThighOuter Thigh
Fat characterSoft, pinchable tissue along the upper inner thighFirmer lateral deposit at the outer hip, sometimes called saddlebag fat
Common concernsFriction during walking, discomfort with clothing, contour in fitted garmentsVisible projection at the outer hip, contour asymmetry
Incision placementGroin crease, to keep marks as hidden as possibleWithin the swimwear line
Who it commonly affectsMen and womenMore common in women due to fat distribution patterns

Both areas can be treated in the same procedure, and the appropriate combination is assessed on an individual basis.

Who Is Thigh Liposuction Suitable For?

Thigh liposuction surgery is appropriate for patients who meet the following profile, assessed individually at consultation:

  • Localised Fat Resistant to Diet and Exercise: The procedure addresses fat deposits that remain despite sustained lifestyle efforts, not generalised weight or overall body composition.
  • Good Skin Elasticity: Patients whose skin has reasonable recoil tend to see a smoother result after fat removal. Where skin laxity is significant, a thigh lift may be the more appropriate surgical option, or a combination approach may be discussed.
  • Stable Weight: Operating on a patient whose weight is still changing produces less predictable results. A period of weight stability before surgery allows for a more accurate assessment and a more consistent outcome.
  • Realistic Expectations About Scope: Thigh liposuction improves contour in a defined area. It is not a weight-loss procedure and does not address skin texture, cellulite, or laxity.
  • General Fitness for Surgery: As with any surgical procedure, overall health, smoking status, and any underlying medical conditions are assessed as part of the suitability evaluation.

Techniques Used for Thigh Liposuction

Several liposuction techniques may be used depending on the volume of fat, the area being treated, and the degree of skin laxity present:

  • Tumescent Liposuction: The foundational technique, in which a saline solution containing local anaesthetic and adrenaline is infused into the treatment area before fat removal, reducing bleeding and improving precision.
  • VASER Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction: Uses ultrasonic energy to loosen fat cells before extraction. VASER is particularly relevant where some skin tightening alongside fat removal is a consideration, as the energy has an effect on the surrounding tissue beyond fat extraction alone.
  • MicroAire Power-Assisted Liposuction: Uses a mechanically vibrating cannula to break up fat with less manual effort, which can improve precision in more fibrous tissue areas.

A full explanation of each technique, including how they differ and when each is appropriate, is available on our liposuction page.

Thigh Liposuction with Skin Tightening

For patients with mild skin laxity who do not require a full thigh lift, concurrent skin tightening procedures may be appropriate alongside liposuction.

  • BodyTite Radiofrequency-Assisted Liposuction: BodyTite delivers radiofrequency energy both externally and internally during the liposuction procedure, stimulating collagen contraction in the overlying skin. It is used where mild laxity is present and where some degree of skin tightening alongside fat removal is a treatment goal.

  • Morpheus8 Body: Morpheus8 is a fractional radiofrequency microneedling device that can be applied to the thigh surface to stimulate collagen remodelling. It is more commonly used as a standalone or maintenance treatment for mild surface laxity rather than as a replacement for surgical lifting.

Neither approach replaces a thigh lift where significant skin excess is present. Whether skin tightening is worth incorporating into a procedure plan depends on the degree of laxity observed at assessment.

The Procedure and Anaesthesia

Thigh liposuction, similar to arm liposuction in Singapore is typically performed as day surgery. Depending on the volume of fat being removed and the areas being treated, the procedure can be performed under local anaesthesia with sedation or under general anaesthesia. The appropriate approach is determined at the pre-operative assessment.

Incisions are less than one centimetre and are placed in locations designed to remain hidden within natural skin creases or the swimwear line. A compression garment is fitted immediately after the procedure and worn during the initial recovery period.

For a full account of the surgical process, see our liposuction page.

Recovery After Thigh Liposuction

Recovery varies by individual and by the volume and areas treated. The following is a general guide:

Compression Garment: A compression garment is worn continuously for the first few weeks and then progressively reduced according to Dr Lee Hanjing's instructions. It supports healing and helps the skin conform to the new contour.

Early Mobilisation: Walking is encouraged from the day of surgery. Staying mobile reduces the risk of complications and supports circulation during the early healing period.

Swelling and Bruising: Both are expected and typically most pronounced in the first two weeks. Swelling in the thighs can persist for several months before the final contour is apparent, as the thigh tissue tends to retain fluid longer than other body areas.

Return to Exercise: Light activity is generally appropriate from around two to three weeks. Higher-impact exercise, including running and cycling, is usually reintroduced at around six weeks, subject to individual recovery.

Final Result: The full result of thigh liposuction in Singapore is typically assessed at three to six months, once swelling has fully resolved.

Risks and Complications

As with all surgical procedures, thigh liposuction carries risks that are discussed in full at consultation. Risks specific to this area include:

  • Contour Irregularity: Uneven fat removal can produce an irregular surface. The risk is managed through surgical technique and is more likely in patients with pre-existing skin irregularity.
  • Changes in Sensation: Temporary numbness or altered sensation in the treated area is common and usually resolves over weeks to months. Persistent sensory change is less common.
  • Seroma: A collection of fluid under the skin can develop after liposuction, particularly in larger-volume cases. Most seromas resolve with aspiration.
  • Infection: As with any surgical incision, infection is a risk, managed through sterile technique and post-operative wound care.
  • Visible Scarring: Incisions are small and placed discreetly, but any surgical incision carries a risk of visible scarring. How scars heal varies by individual.

Thigh Liposuction Cost in Singapore

Thigh liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure and is generally not claimable through Medisave or private insurance. The cost of thigh liposuction surgery depends on several factors:

  • number of areas treated (inner thigh, outer thigh, or both)
  • technique used
  • anaesthesia required
  • hospital facility fees

An definitive cost estimate is provided following an individual assessment.
