Pigmentation

Structural / Shadowing

This darkness is an optical illusion produced not by altered skin colour, but by hollow contours. Age-related volume loss, deep tear troughs, or midface bone resorption create a physical recession. This recession catches light poorly and casts a deep shadow that mimics dark pigmentation, even when the skin tone itself is perfectly uniform. 

Mixed

The most common presentation seen in a specialist clinic. The majority of individuals exhibit a combination of two or more profiles simultaneously. Correctly identifying each component prevents treating a structural shadow with a pigmentation laser, or vice versa, ensuring the clinical path matches the anatomy.
